Acacia and Rain
Subject: Acacia Tree
Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
An acacia tree stands alone in bright sunlight against the backdrop of a summer rainstorm sweeping its way across the Maasai Mara plains in Southern Kenya. No other tree epitomizes quite so well the challenging conditions and extreme adaptations required to survive in the African savanna. This acacia is tough: it's not only equipped to thrive in the severe heat and long droughts in this environment, but it also defends itself from hungry intruders with long, sharp thorns and the ability to produce deadly chemical toxins when disturbed.
