A Heron Dance

Subject: Great Blue Herons
Eagle Creek Park, Indiana
Two great blue herons dash and dart above the surface of Eagle Creek, mirroring each other's moves in a mid-air dance that seems to celebrate the last rays of evening light shining sparingly through the hilltop hardwoods that serve as horizon here. But unlike most waterfowl, great blues don't necessarily need all that light; these enormous, ancient-looking birds, are uniquely adapted to hunt these shallow waters at both day and night due to an uncommonly high percentage of rod-type photoreceptors in their eyes.
