Subject: Coyotes & Raven
Antelope Island State Park, Utah
A patiently-waiting coyote thief takes full advantage of a brief moment of distraction when, in an effort to defend his fresh kill, her mate turns his attention to a scavenging raven. In a flash, the prankster recognizes her opportunity and swoops in from out-of-frame to snatch the rabbit carcass almost directly from the jaws of her mate, escaping at a full sprint with her bounty in-mouth and her furious companion giving chase. Much like their canid cousins--wolves, foxes, and even domesticated dogs--this type of thievery between coyotes generally falls into the category of playful sharing, rather than reflecting some more malicious intention.
